Reflection BLOG

WE MADE IT! Never thought I would get to reach this point, yet everything went so fast. You can clearly see my overwhelm and confused state. This project was a learning experience, challenged and motivated. I learned to use the tools, materials, and resources practically available and focus all of my attention to adhering to my pre planned schedule and developing organizational skills. The portfolio project was an insightful task, pushing my abilities to level I didn't know existed, way beyond comfort zones. I evoked and developed a great understanding and appreciation for the film media world.Learning skills of time management and adhering to responsibilities on a personal schedule, and how to combine prior and new information to create the 2 minute film opening.

One of the highlights of the project was undoubtedly being able to apply the knowledge I learned during the school year. For instance, filming perspectives and shots cohering and correlating with my narrative and extending my production abilities to incorporate mi-en-scene which was my absolute favorite. Selecting outfits for my character, props, hairstyle choices, all these details was super interesting and fun! For example, the brilliant idea of symbolizing the heart shaped necklace, how such a simple prop could have so much significance and importance. All these acts, steps, and detail only increase my admirable for such professions for pre existing films. Are feature and specific detail once unnoticed and unappreciated now captures and allures me. Most of all, I am extremely proud of the consistent and effective communication my partner, Camila Sanchez and I had through out the project, from start to finish. There was such an easy flow of ideas, opinions, perspectives. Establishing an open debate maintaining a collaborative environment, we listened to each others ideas, and respectfully agreed to disagree to remain equally satisfied with the project. If it weren't for the balanced responsibility, this project wouldn't have been as successful as it is now. Realizing our mistakes and making cool collaborative executive decisions for solutions. 

As wish to tell old me, starting the project fresh, is to record more footage! For future improvement, I would have rearranged my timeline schedule and planned to meet my partner more inperson during non school hours. However, ultimately I am very proud of both my partner and I because our ideas became a reality and we learned so much about ourselves and each other.

Title & Credits BLOG

Completing all aspects of editing visuals and sounds, my partner, Camila Sanchez and I took on the final stage and step of incorporating the title and credits. Taking advantage of our physical collaboration, sharing ideas and perspectives on selecting the appropriate fonts and colors was beneficial. Fortunately, during the planning and research stage a few weeks ago, Camila and I had already pre designed and narrowed the type of font desired for the initial title slide. This prior foundation was favorable, navigating a more precise path. 

However, we ran into a little situation because Imovie had a limited amount of fonts and the specific font we wanted... sadly was missing. Fear not, because you have to work around our problems and not stress, we found a solution. Scrolling through the options, we found the font "Georgia". Elegant yet effortless, this title was everything we were looking for and was pretty similar to the original font selected on Canva platform. Following, tying in with the "GOLD" from the title, Camila and I just HAD TO pick a darker and deeper golden color that was mysterious and clearly visible layered over the dark screen. For a creative and fluid transition, Camila and I had the idea of placing the title "GOLDEN ESCAPE" at the start on both a black screen and the first establishing shot. Initially, we had planned to place the slide solely on the establishing shot, however, the visuals was too crowded and cluttered, ignoring the significance of the title words. Showing the video to our families and third person perspectives, although they enjoyed viewing the film, there remained constant confusion of the repeating funeral scenes. "What are all these flowers" "Why do we keep going back to the urn and what does it have to do with the girl?" This was definitely not good, a major problem. Although our intention was to evoke skepticism and perplexity, there still needed to be a basic understanding of her intentions, wanting to flee, and faking her death. The curiosity needed to remain with the realm of why? The motives. So we decided to focus and edit the visuals to focus on the funeral picture, and following the title slide, and the time and date of the escaping scene. 

As for the credits, this was much less complex despite not discussing and determining the fonts and color. Prior, we had only decided to distributive spread out the credits on the screen, reaching from different corners. Fortunately, having your friend as your partner, ideas connected and determining the final font was easy as pie! Selecting a basic white font, the intention was not to drive the attention away form the main focus on the screen: Grace. Camila and I divided and distributed the roles of the credits such as director, editor, producer, costumer designer, editor, etc. I super happy with how everything turned out! Here are a couple images from the film for examples. 

Finishing Sound

Following the sound editing process, my partner and I inserted background chatter into the interior store scene to create a public ambiance and changed the sound of the door. Adjusting with the volume of the sound, my partner and I were playing with layering and arranging the intensity of certain sounds to enhance focus on certain objects that synchronized with the visuals on the screen. Creating fluidity between cuts and scenes, capcut allowed users to modify and regulate with fade in and fade out system. This helps introduce a new scene or location that requires various completely different features of background sounds. For example, transitioning from outdoors to indoors, we faded out the traffic, bird, and wind sound to ventilator AC sounds and people chattering to fulfill an overall environment within closed doors. 

Incorporating class practice and prior knowledge gained in class, we fabricated foley sounds from the heels, bag zipper, and sneaker walking. Marching on a concrete floor, my partner put her heels on and paced around in circles while I recorded her. Following the rhythm and movements of the actor on the scene, we attempted to match and synchronize the image with the auditory. Dropping her heel on the floor, my partner mimicked the movements and actions of the character. As for the foley sounds of the zipper, we used our wallet and tightly recorded the zipper sound produced, matching time length, and speed. Instead of recording a male voice announcing a prayer, we decided it best to add a church choir sound in the background since we believe it is too overpowering to add two different voices overlapping and intertwining. Since the main focus was the female voice reciting the monologue, we put the prayer aside and added the element of the funeral through sorrowful religious music. Adapting to the film opening, our final conclusion assured the church choir sounds would play for the entire necessary time because playing it only during the funeral scene was seriously not ideal. Sounded pretty terrible...

The most challenging was ensuring the sounds and visuals were convoluted and interlaced finely together. Not only ensuring synchronization but enforcing materials used for the foley and the sound effects are similar to the actions and props visually performed. Guaranteeing the sound perspective is realistic, production must be representative of life reality.

start CCR BLOG

Getting a head start on answering some of the questions for the Creative Critical reflection, I decided to take a look at the four umbrellas of questions I have to answer. Dedicating my focus to 2 of the questions, I began analyzing the query: "How does your product engage with the audience and how would it be distributed?" Examining the direct target audience, I summed from my understanding young adults and teenagers were the appropriate individuals attracted to viewing such a production. Discussing topics of association and connection, I gathered the intention and objective to gaining such a wide range of majority individuals is due to compatibility and quality relatable. With prior knowledge collected and conveyed in class and research, audiences enjoy viewing an individual with similar traits or emotions resembling themselves. Realistically reaching our intended audience, our distribution method would begin by utilizing YouTube or additional streaming services including Hulu or Amazon Prime Video. Although not a reputable or high-end method of distribution, these platforms are still engaged and utilized by the target audience.

"How does your production skill develop throughout this project?" This is the second question I began answering. More simply and specifically, I reflected on the process of storyboarding, research, and approaches. I analyzed on the challenges and drawbacks from start to finish, discussing solutions to the struggles. I am commentating on the fundamental step, RESEARCHING, which I did a lot on in my blogs, extremely helpful btw! I noted my research on drama film openings, fonts, colors, voiceovers, etc. Following, to give credibility and entertainment, I will provide an example of the Girl Interrupted film opening where I narrate the notice of soft somber music linked with the closeup focused shots of the young girl's disturbed and grim facial expressions. Succeeding, then I analyze the storyboarding process and how the ideas and perspectives from my partner and I flow in a gentle fluidity from nothing to SOMETHING, the project! From brainstorming ideas to writing the visuals pre-write, our design and goals came to life.

Voiceovers BLOG

Voiceovers are disembodied voices we hear throughout movies. A powerful tool in a filmmaker's arsenal.  Voice-over provides a new dimension to a story, offering benefits that visuals alone can't provide. One key benefit in filling in backstory or exposition. Imagine a complex film where understanding a character's past is crucial. A well-placed voiceover can give us flashbacks or insights into a character's motivations without interrupting the flow of the scene. Voiceovers intel the character's internal thoughts through a monologue, allowing the audience to directly interpret their feelings and emotional state. This is especially useful for portraying unreliable narrators or characters with complex inner lives. 

The Shawshank Redemption:

The voiceover in this movie sheds light on the character's emotions following the death of his comrade. The way various synchronized and ambient sounds can be heard in the background of the voiceover is what drew my attention to this voiceover. For instance, the protagonist is shown laboring with other inmates in a cemetery toward the conclusion. The voiceover is now playing, but you can just make out the faint sounds of the workers working on the grass in the background. Another instance is at the beginning when the voiceover is audible together with the background sound of the wind while a guy is seen operating an audible. The voiceover pausing during this scenario and the diegetic sound playing in between was another element that drew my attention. The voiceover paused while the men were eating, allowing you to see the character's facial expressions and hear the diegetic sound of the men joking and conversing. Since the audience is still listening to the surrounding sounds, I believe that this helps to make the voice-over feel more realistic, like you're actually inside the character's head.

My partner and I pitched the idea of a voice-over a few weeks ago to our teacher and she gave us the green light, however, alerting and warning us of her opinion. She believes voiceovers to be lazy and cliche, therefore, she opted and advised us to do a voiceover but not throughout the whole 2 minute film opening. 

Sound Effects BLOG

Moving on from the visual editing, my partner and I went on Pixabay, an online website, to collect and download the sound effects necessary for the video. Sound effects bring the visuals to life. For example, the creaking of floorboards in a horror or suspenseful movie or a loud car or plane engine in an action movie makes the scene feel believable and draws one into the world. Sound can be incredibly powerful in stirring emotions. Sometimes, the visuals just aren't enough and sound effects tied with the rhythm of the displays on the scene or separately provide extensive or additional information. Primarily, we began with the outdoor scene, looking for traffic sounds, birds chirping, and a rustic door sound combined with a chime of a bell to enhance the audial environment. We adjusted the timing for the door sounds to coincide with the rhythm and pacing of the visuals. We added a lighter bird sound at the start of the scene and followed a darker bird chirping sound at the end to shine and highlight the contrast of the heartfelt to mysterious and gim atmosphere. Inside the store, we added an airconditioner, ventilator sound, people chattering, the foley sounds of the heels walking, etc. To engage divergence in material quality, we added a creaking door sound for opening the bathroom door inside the store due to the possibility of different door weights and screw and hinge quality. 

Sadly, I could not access Pixabay through my computer to continue the editing process on one single device or electronic. I downloaded the video's final version and sent it to my partner's computer where she imported the video into capcut to begin sound editing. We added zipper sounds, wind sounds for the funeral scene, car door opening with a closing shut bang, etc. Unfortunately, we had to part halfway through the editing and we'll meet again to finalize the sound effects of the second half of the video. We will then add the voice overs of the girl talking and priest after. 

Editing BLOG

Just wanted to announce, WE ARE DONE EDITING! 

All the videos were put together, approved, and completed. We did have to make a slight change and go with plan B to conclude the film because plan A of shooting inside of the car was just... not looking too good, at least to say true amateur work. Deciding to get an outsider's perspective, my partner and I asked our families to review our process and provide feedback, including necessary changes. The majority agreed that plan B was definitely the better and more secure option. There was more fluidity and coherence in the clip sequence. Our feedback embraces additional tips for video adjustments, shortening, and lengthening here and there. Some pauses were crucial to cut out and the short scene of the close-up funeral shots reccomned to remain within 1-1:30 seconds. To enhance the intimacy and connection between the audience and the character, we settled on tightening and zooming in on certain shots to gain a greater and deeper focus on details, facial expressions, and objects. It was necessary to remove and eliminate several of the makeup scene shots because if we added all the videos wanted, we would have reached way over the 2-minute limit.

The final shot was the heart necklace hanging off the tree. We desired a creative perspective as the concluding shot because it instills curiosity, confusion, and intriguement. All the editing for the filming was done on I Movie, a platform both my partner and I feel comfortable working with. The next step is to add the credits distributed around the scene and prolonged throughout the whole 2 minutes. Additionally, we will need to start working on the sound effects and adding the voiceovers of the young girl speaking and the priest reciting the prayer. 

Here's a picture of my partner and I grinding! Getting the work done! Since we haven't worked much during school hours due to her absence and misguiding of time management, we met up after school to finalize the editing and continue commencing on the sound effects and credits. The editing process was shockingly simple. I assumed it would be very challenging and tedious because of my amateur and limited experience in previous editing. However, with time and additional exterior feedback, it turned out to be pretty successful and my partner and I are content. 

Editing part 1 BLOG

The editing Stage has ARRIVED! Whos excited?! possibly a little nervous, me and editing aren't great friends... But we shall try and make it work! 

Camila, my partner, sent all the short clips of the filming from her phone to my computer. Signal was a pain and not on our side so that took a while. However, once the loading was completed, I arranged the videos in chronological order on my computer's desktop. Starting with Imovie to test my skills, I began inserting the videos regardless of length. Looking over the various videos, my partner and I began eliminating clips since there was definitely overshooting and 2 minutes is a limited time. Cutting the extended time and unnecessary additions to each video, there still remains a major need to reduce and shorten certain clips. Working with a lot of short clips rather than elongated shots, my partner and I have to ensure there is fluidity and consistency throughout the production and film rather than a collection of 1-4 second videos. 

Looking over the ending and final clips, there definitely needs either a reshoot or having to go with our plan B option where the character avoids the car throws the heart necklace in the bushes outside the 7-Eleven, and walks off. I will continue to discuss this with my partner because I haven't been able to look at the plan B selection of pictures. Fortunately, I have been able to incorporate the funeral scenes alternating between the shots, however, there is still a need to compress and diminish the timely length. 

Creative Critical Reflection Notes BLOG

A quick break from the execution and progress to completing the 2-minute film opening, I will take advantage of my partners' short absence to discuss a major section of finalizing the AICE exam: The CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION. 25 out of 50, the cumulative points of the creative critical reflection consist of half the total grade! To say the least, this is serious. The purpose of the creative critical reflection is to contemplate and deliberate on the production progress, including planning, production outline, and final completion. Additionally, responding to the required question and articulating elaborative in-depth accurate answers while expressing personality and creativity are the basic necessities to successfully concluding the project. Providing with examples or ideas to expand, previous students have made presentations with voiceovers, enhanced podcasts, talk host shows where a subject interviews the director, etc. to discuss responses to questions, utilizing contextual sounds and maintaining continuous engagement. 

There are 4 questions CRUCIAL to answer. 

1. "How does product challenge genre conventions and represent social groups or issues?" This question is intended to express the conflicts and compelling situations and genres presented in the film opening. It is very important to include credible and accurate information from sources and cite their accountability. Contemplating and defining why or why not a topic is challenging conventions through in telling on representation including individuals, groups, events, and issues as illustrated within production.

2. "How does your product engage with the audience and how would it be distributed?" This question discusses the direct target audience and how to reach and allocate such a specific group of individuals. Additionally, elaborating on how to make the film available as a method of distribution has to be realistic. Most likely this would include streaming services or online platforms such as YouTube.

3. "How does your production skill develop throughout this project?" This third question is more simple and specific since I will reflect on the process of storyboarding, research, and approaches. Furthermore, I will dictate all the challenges and drawbacks from start to end and solutions. Initial struggles and future growth.

4. "How did you integrate technologies, software, hardware, and online in this project?" Being straight to the point, I will point out all the equipment used in fabricating the 2-minute film opening, including my phone and online platforms such as my blog. Additonal lighting, tripod, microphones, etc. will be answered in this question. Discussing on questions such as "How did you use such technologies to help solve problems?" and "What new techniques did you learn?". 

Ending: I will create a final statement reflecting the project as a whole. What have I learned? What would I do differently? Improvements for next time? It is recommended to write a script and avoid having a "talking head"! It is key I add and edit clips from my proper film opening as examples and external videos from researched film openings at the beginning of my production. Plus, finalizing the creative critical reflection, and adding a rolling credit of all the researched sources is a great idea! The creative critical reflection is a maximum of ten minutes where I answer the 4 questions and subject with two different executed media examples. I was thinking of doing a casual daily vlog combined with me answering the question and I also like the idea of a talk show host and making it comedic. 

Filming part 2

All done recording! Meeting up at my house, my partner and I completed the funeral scene filming! We had a bit of a scare at first because we were unable to allocate our most important Mi-en-scene prop, the heart necklace. We went back to our previous filming location and looked in all the bags and drawers of the house only to find it inside my laundry room. We took a picture of our actress with the heart necklace on and created a poster on canva to utilize as a memorial and remembrance frame and design. We printed the poster in 8 by 10 in Walgreens to achieve a glossy and large representation. 

Going outside to achieve natural lighting and wind, my partner and I arranged fake flowers, a structured vase as an urn, an easel to hold the poster, a bible, and a rosary to establish the content and setting of the plot. We asked my dad to play the role of a priest with a combination of close-up shots. He wore a full navy blue button-up outfit and we put a strap of paper in between his collar to enhance the look and intention of his position and profession. One of our close-up shots consisted of "the priest" holding the bible and rosary around his hands. We hope such elements form and demonstrate context, mood, and habit.

The filming was pretty simple. We collected a bunch of shots just in case during editing we need a variety of shots. The following step is to begin editing! I will go over the videos we have collected and select the preferred ones. We will start looking into Adobe Premiere or Imovie. Succeding to the editing, we will record the actress's voice for the voice over and monitor and evaluate then details of timing, length, and writing content. 

Filming Part 1 Blog #12

The day has arrived to finally begin filming the 2-minute project film opening! FINALLY! 

At 10:30 am, Camila, Sienna Morel (Actress), and I met at our designated gas station filming location. Unfortunately, we couldn't film for legal and corporate reasons and had to redirect and decide a new filming location. Instead of arriving in panic mode, which is a common occurrence, I proposed to film at 7-Eleven. Thank god, after asking the man at the cashier, we were given permission to shoot footage outside the 7-Eleven, amongst the store isles, and inside the isles. For precaution, my partner and I thought it best to over record, and collect a variety of videos to later select the best and reduce the chances of having to reshoot after editing.  Starting exterior, we captured a long shot of the gas station as a title slide for introduction, and then the character walks into the store with a variation of close-up door handle shots, medium, and long shots. Inside the gas station store, we recorded the character making her way up, down, and around the corner, in between the isles from behind and in front. 

Following, although there were visions that were unsuccessfully executed, my partner and I found solutions and different perspectives. For example, in the bathroom scene, we had previously planned to cut the character's hair and dye it, however, due to limited time and achieving clear performance, we were resolute on converting her transformation by utilizing a wig and making it a prop or physical feature in the film. Although we had brought scissors, shampoo, and flour to complete the hair dye mix, and a towel for drying, my partner and I were still unsure how to avoid a fake look and make it the most realistic as possible. We shot the makeup and outfit transformation scene with a divergence of closeups, mid shots, over-the-shoulder shots, etc. To make the scene more interpersonal and isolated, we shot the character from behind, looking at herself in the mirror. We aim to gather these clips and shorten then to make a faster pace rhythm in the film opening, and ensure there's sufficient time for the following scene. In case of poor or limited timing, we created two endings for the 2-minute film opening. We filmed the character leaving the gas station, throwing the heart necklace into the bushes. Then we shot getting into a car and driving away, throwing the necklace from the window. There was nothing more stressful than this moment. Every time we went to start recording and moving the car, it felt like every person who existed decided to race the car and drive down the road. A true struggle. When the necklace was thrown out of the window, we had to immediately stop the car and run to pick it up from the ground. A true anxious moment, but ultimately, a success!

The next step is to begin filming the funeral scene and the voice-over. Most likely, the filming and recording will take place over the weekend to begin editing next week and remain on track with our planned schedule. Everything seems to be in control and effectiveness is in execution. Here are some photos to laugh at!

Filming Schedule #11

Unfortunately, although my partner and I planned to begin filming during the weekend and avoid recording during the week due to school hours, our props aren't arriving on time. Luckily, tomorrow, Wednesday, March 6th, there is no school! It is the perfect opportunity for my partner and I to begin filming part of our 2 minute film opening. Its the real deal!

We will meet up tomorrow at our designated gas station recording location with our actress, Sienna Morel, to start filming the identity transformation process. I will bring the wig, a towel, sunglass, hat, the change of clothes (consists of baggy jeans, white tank top and sneakers), the heart necklace, hair pony tail extension, and makeup. Camila, my partner will bring scissors, a tote bag, conditioner and flour/starch to create the hair dye mix, and additional makeup. In order to create the illusion of the character cutting her hair, we will utilize and fake hair extension instead of cutting away the actresses real hair. Sienna will walk into the shooting with her mi-se-scene prepared. She will be wearing a sundress, light makeup, and pink heels. We will shot outside long shots of the gas station, tracking shots walking between the isles of the shop, and transformation scene inside the bathroom. My partner and I plan to over shoot just to make sure there is enough content in case some don't turn out the best. 

Today, I will take a photograph of the actress is her regular day to day life wearing the heart necklace. This picture will be captured in the photo frame during the funeral scene. I will send the photo to my partner where she will print it out and place it inside the frame and write out the characters name, date of birth, and date of passing.

Definitely this weekend, whether Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, the team will rejoin at someone's house to begin filming the funeral scene. We will shoot outside and inside to determine and finalize preferred lighting. For the funeral scene we will need a male actors hands to carry the bible and rosery, a table to place all the arrangements, fake flowers, the picture frame, and a vase in replacement of an urn, 

Mi-Se-Scene + Locations #10

Creating grave stone for the funeral scene: use a vase as an urn, fake flowers, picture frame + picture of actress "in previous look", grave stone (made of Styrofoam colored in grey with name writing over it) bible, cross necklace, rosery in hand, priest outfit (black button up, white collar made out of paper, black pants, possibly white table cloth to make robe)

Narrowing down to the smallest details, my partner and I began electing detailed mi-se-scene elements, including props, costume design, colors. Starting with the main costume

Group meeting #9

Assembled into groups, today’s class consisted of collaborative reflection, pausing, listening and providing constructive criticism and feedback. Joining into groups of 5, each student shared their progress thus far into the project. Although some more advanced than others, there remained a general competition of a storyboarding and thorough analysis and research on selected genre and additional film opening. Each member discussing their 2 minute film opening plot, our group maintained super engaged and attracted to the stories being shared. 

One of the group members decided to create their plot based on a serial killer stalking friends leaving a party. The rest of the group recommended to redirect and re-navigate the plot towards avoiding the act of stalking and murdering to only highlight elements and details of such a psychotic persona. Additionally, creating a party environment is challenging due to gathering an excessive quantity of people and precise scheduling, therefore we encouraged a minimal and simpler route where three friends are presented leaving a party shot exterior from the house. Another students requested ideas and topics to discuss on his updating blogs. The group advised blog post researching additional film openings, themes, colors, fonts for titles, and a deep analysis on proceeding through storyboarding and screenplay writing. We encouraged to write both the successes and failures encountered. 

Outlining the plot of my personal 2 minute film opening, the group collaboratively encouraged and recommended to shorten or eliminate certain scenes and details of the story. Possibly removing the escaping car scene and reducing the female character entering her car, or simply throwing away the heart necklace into the trash bin, such a complex plot would successfully be narrowed down. Arriving to an agreement that we had many ideas and directions for creating a plot, however, emphasising the importance organized our ambitions within structured and realistic boundaries. I shared my concerns about editing and the group agreed and approved I begin filming this weekend to established and set enough time and energy to carefully completing the editing. Sharing my screenplay writing, they enjoyed reading the voiceover dialogue. 

Screenplay #8

Putting our thoughts into words, we create the written screenplay with a quick description of the actions conceding with the verbal narration. The 2 minute film opening doesn’t involve any interaction between characters, therefore the signal screenplay writing involved is dialogue from a voice over narrated from the perspective of the main female character. 

This is a draft of the dialogue. The characters name must be written in all capital letters and the dialogue or monologue recited by the character remain in the middle aligned structure of the page. The actions presented are located and organised on the left margin of the page. I am aware the actions aren’t clearly presented throughout the plot of the dialogue, however my partner and I are unfamiliar and uncertain how the outline and timing with correlate between the speech and follow through of physical actions. 

My partner and I designed a dialogue that drive deep the characters mind and indulges its profound and appalling thoughts. The character rejects her own self visually meanwhile rejecting the bullying comments later realized shared by friends and family she once believe truely loved her. Sharing the true thoughts and verbal passive aggression of others, the character shines light on her possible honest self, for once! 

Storyboarding #7

My partner and I designed the main storyline of our narrative. Throughout the last few previous brainstorming classes, today we outlined a more precise course of action utilizing a storyboard. My partner and I divided our planning outline into various scenes with a visual and descriptive approach. (Although we created a direct sequence, my partner and I will most likely organize and change our path during the filming process. For example, this includes scenes from how to shoot the funeral, types of shots capturing the getting ready scene, etc. We are mapping these sequences to determine which shots would work best together and which would work best together and which would best advance the plot.

We are arranging out shots in a manner that is effective and visually appealing, and the planning is simply assisting us in thinking through the specifics that will go into creating a slightly more focused opening. My partner and I noticed the possibility of running into a slight problem durning the “changing identity scene”. We understood we couldn’t reasonably dye our actors hair, so we figure a practical solution. To provide the effect of a bleach dye, we will mix conditioner with either flour or starch to create a paint like consistency. Additionally, capturing a realistic setting of a funeral is not easy task. Therefore, we will arrange a collection of close up shots to enhance the elements of a funeral. For example, instead of utilizing a casket, we will positions an urn surrounded by flowers and a picture frame to signify and represent the occasion. 

In order to create the illusion of dyed hair, my partner and I will purchase a blonde wig and capture a transition from previous hair to results of bleaching. Durning the identity transformation, we are still considering whether to record a voice over accompanying the theme and content of the plot, triggering curiosity through a poetic monologue.

Titles, Fonts, and Colors #6

Brains to work because today we brainstormed several title ideas for the film opening. Receiving the first impression, the movie title must pique interest, set the tone, and hint at the genre. A memorable title becomes a part of the film industry, standing out in a crowded market. For example, "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings" remain instantly recognizable and have immersed cultural weight. Additionally,  titles serve artistic expressions, whether witty, metaphorical, cryptic, etc., thus reflecting the themes and creative vision.  Nevertheless, quite the challenge. Taking details, symbols, and elements from the mi-se-scene, character identity, and context of the plot, my partner and I formulated several examples:

- heart-fled ("Heart" from the necklace the female character carries around the neck and "fled" due to plot description of parting from her home and town. Leaving her past, her heart flees in search of something new to fulfill the vacancy)

- Golden escape ("Golden" references the color of the necklace worn by the actress and thrown away at the end and "escape" correlates to the act of vanishing her home, breaking free to the world beyond.)

- cut and run (Cutting her past to run for a better place)

Poster Grind Article, "Top 7 Fonts Used in Drama Movie Posters" mentions how drama is a form of fiction that prioritizes and revolves a serious tone to portray difficult and controversial subjects. Dramatic stories rather than science fiction or action movies tend to be more unique and complex. Depending on the context of the film, whether a drama about seeking oneself an earning a happy ending or doom to sad conclusions, understanding the messages of the film is essential to selecting the perfect font. Fonts with bold and thick shapes is commonly utilized. Angles and structures, whether straight or curved mirror the context of the movie. For example, "Daisy Jones and the Six" is illustrated in bolded, curved, and spiraled font referring to the 70s aesthetic and hippy atmosphere presented in the series. In contrast, the film "Pulp Fiction" remains bolded however with straight lines, resembling to a comic or cartoon font style. Going on Canva, my partner and I began testing out several font options resonating with both the plot description and thorough research conducted. 

   

Colors:

No Film School published an article, “The Psychology of Color in Film”. - The deliberate use of color to elicit particular emotional and psychological reactions from viewers is known as “color psychology” in films and television shows. Color selection improves narrative, fleshes out the character, and creates engrossing environments. Every hue has unique meanings and associations that affect how the observer perceives and feels. Color evokes strong feelings and tales in the audiences by appealing to their subconscious.

Examples:

- Great Gatsby: Vibrant and rich colors are used to convey the grandeur of the Roaring Twenties. Lively greens and golds accentuate the opulence of the time, while darker blues and grays reflect the overarching themes of excess and disillusionment.

- Shindlers List: The red coat worn by the young girl stands out dramatically, even though the majority of the film is in black and white. This draws attention to the suffering amid the gloom and acts as a potent visual device.

Researching Drama Thriller Film Openings #5

American Beauty starts with a grainy and vintage capture camera recording of a young girl lying in bed. Conversing and dialogue between the young girl and the unidentified individual, the audience understands the female character is video calling a man. The young girl complains of her father and the man states: "Do you want me to kill him?" Replying, the young girl pauses as an element of suspense and replies, "Yeah. Would you?" The dialogue between the character and the undisclosed identity of the male figure provides the opening scene with an eerie, unsettling curiosity that engages further viewing. Following, in simple red straight-colored font, with a black screen behind, titles; "American Beauty". Introduced to a landscape-long shot of the setting from above addition to the monotone voice-over, the audience acknowledges the plainness and simplicity of the town. The meticulously manicured lawns and cookie-cutter houses paint a picture-perfect American life. However, the camera lingers on the cracks in the facade hinting at the dysfunction and unhappiness beneath the surface. "In less than a year, I'll be dead." The narrator mentions such a statement possibly correlating to the previous scene of intending to commit a murder. 

Girl Interrupted - The fogged window, architected in a jail-like structure, introduces the primary visual of the film's opening. The soft and somber music in the background reflects the sad expressions on the close-up shots of the young girl's faces. Shattered glass on the floor and almost updated sering are both symbolic features and details elevating the location's setting and environment. The voiceover of a young female during the film opening, questioning the audience, all announced in a meloncoly enunciation. Her dialogue is fragmented and cryptic, hinting at underlying mental struggles and a desire to resist authority. At the end of the voiceover, the female character refers to herself as a "Girl Interpreted". This scene is cold and sterile, dominated by its dim lighting. The grim environment emphasizes the clinical nature of the young girl's confinement and creates a sense of detachment from the outside world.
