Representation Reflection

Favorite TV Show: Game of Thrones

Woman, in Game of Thrones, features a diverse range of female characters, varied in strengths, weaknesses, and storylines. On the one hand, Game of Thrones showcases powerful and complex female characters who challenge traditional gender roles and expectations, such as characters like Daenerys Targaryen, Cersei Lannister, and Arya Stark are depicted as strong, intelligent, and capable individuals who navigate a male-dominated world. These characters often display resilience and strategic thinking, which can empower and motivate the audience. However, there is an additional major pull of criticism towards the show's constant portrayal of women in terms of sexual objectification and violence. The female endures violent sexual encounters and exploitation and diminished or disgraded their role or opportunities correlating with power or authority. Presented in limited clothing or nudity, the image of woman is not taken seriously causing a spark of discussion regarding the balance between empowerment and exploitation in the representation of women in media.

As for the representation of various ethnicities or people of color versus the typical white male characters, unfortunately, there is a lack of the casting of individuals of color, influencing or impacting the media industry. The show, Game of Thrones, displays a shallow regard for diversity and limited actor roles provided to people of color. Although the show is based on George R.R. Martin's book series, and the lack of diversity in the source material has been carried over to the adaptation, this does not absolve the show from the responsibility of addressing representation issues. Some characters such as Missandei and Grey Worm have been given significant roles, however, their representation remains limited compared to the overall narrative.

Game of Thrones attempts to represent disabilities within its narrative. For example, Bran Stark, who becomes paralyzed from the waist down after being pushed off a tower in the first season is followed through and portrayed throughout the series and it becomes a significant aspect of his character development, strengths, and perseverance. Bran's disability in the Game of Thrones is multi-faced. It showcases the challenges he faces and the impact it has on his life, both physically and emotionally. The show explores his journey of adapting to his new circumstances and learning to navigate the world using a wheelchair and eventually discovering his ability to turn into animals. Furthermore, Game of Thrones also introduces other characters such as Tyrion Lannister who is a dwarf. Tyrion's character challenges societal norms and stereotypes as he proves himself to be intelligent, cunning, and capable despite the blocks he faces.

In terms of production value, Game of Thrones is renowned for it high production quality, including elaborate sets, stunning visual effects, and detailed costumes. The series invests heavily in creating a realistic and immersive world, which enhances the audience's engagement and enjoyment. Game of Thrones expanded its reach through international distribution deals, making the show available to audiences worldwide. This gained a massive following and contribution to its cultural impact.
